Introduction -

BBR #30 1/12/2022 “For the kids with no place to go” First episode recorded and produced since September 2019. After more than a year on hiatus through the pandemic, during which I had got rid of my “professional” account and removed past episodes, I decided it was time I brought back this podcast. But why now after all this time, after I decided that making these weren’t so important to me anymore? I guess for me maybe it’s not so much a question of why, but why not. Music has been and always will be a reflection of the many different ways I feel about life at any given time, and my way of relating myself to the world at large.

I plan on creating a separate entry or episode based on the history / idea behind the podcast but that’ll be for a later time. Suffice to say at one time creating these episodes and setting out on a “musical journey” to acquire the vinyl I used to produced previous episodes had been an all encompassing ordeal. I used to spend a lot of time looking up and researching music, thinking of themes, hunting down records, arranging the order, and recording episodes for about 5 or 6 years. 29 episodes doesn’t sound like a lot (we used to try and go for an episode a month) but if you think about everything that went into the production of each episode and the fact that we were posting it all up for free (actually out of our own pockets) became increasingly difficult to upkeep. Aside from the actual challenge of producing something like this, I more or less fell out of favor of doing it because ultimately it seemed like something that was drawing my focus away from everything else that had been going on in my life that needed my attention, so I decided to pull the plug, never thinking that I’d jumpstart it again.

Still, for whatever reason, something persists in my mind to keep making these, whether anybody listens or not, for me it’s almost beside the point. I do this for me because it purges something out of me I don’t feel I can do another way, it’s like my mind gets stuck on a loop until I get the thought out. Then I can be done with it and move on to the next, which is something I’m always needing to do. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate any and all listeners and love whatever feedback I get in making these, but it’s something I like to do regardless, and something I can always do. Music is a journey, not a destination, and I’m just along for the ride.

Peter Laughner - These Days (Jackson Browne Cover)

“I like sad songs more than anything else”

I’ve been out walking

I don’t do that much talking these days

These days

These days I seem to think a lot

About the things that I forgot to do

And all of the times I had a chance to

I had a lover

I don’t believe I’ll risk another these days

These days

And if I seem to be afraid

To live the life that I had made in song

Well it’s just that I’ve been losing so long

I stopped my rambling

I don’t do that much gambling these days

These days

These days I spend my time alone

And count the time in quarter tones content

Don’t confront me with my failures

I had not forgotten them

This song’s been covered dozens of times, most notably Nico’s cover from her debut album Chelsea Girls, which features John Cale from the velvet underground on guitar, who’s plucking style Pete is obviously trying to emulate in his version as he was also a fan of the VU and Lou Reed, who’s songs he also covered (Jackson Browne’s original was more of a straight country ballad). Pete was a very prolific singer / songwriter and sometimes contributor to Creem Magazine.

Good Morning - Once you know

Once you know what I’ve got to say

That’ll explain why

And how I feel at the end of the day

Is to do with you, and I

Is there a question on your mind

Or did I read you wrong?

How do I know what you feel inside

Sometimes I try but it’s gone

It’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone, it’s gone

You need a lover more than you let on

Don’t need me as your friend

I’m thinking that I’m just in love

what’s the difference in the end?

the end, the end, the end, the end, the end, the end, the end

Loving - Visions

I’ve got a vision so clear in my head

it’s a strange kind of prison

it is and it isn’t

It’s the life that I’m bound to live

Without ever knowing why

It’s the beauty of the morning

It’s the soft line of your thigh

It’s the day that I found your note

as I walked along the shore

I read the lines you wrote

left hidden in my coat

It’s the truth

It’s the truth

and it’s a lie

She loved to be alone alone

to feel the shape of herself, a home

That could not be known

like stranger on the street

whose eyes you fail to meet

He loved to be alone alone

to feel the limits of his arrows blown

scattered and thrown

like on a windy day

all meaning cast away

It’s the truth

It’s the truth

And it’s a lie

Cotton Jones - By Morning Light

I was crying just to see a tear

Cause I realized I hadn’t cried all year

It’s getting better now, It’s getting better now

I’ll just come here waiting for the sky to clear

I haven’t seen it so in years

I haven’t seen it so in years

I haven’t seen it so in years

I haven’t seen it so in years

All around, all around
Came the Siamese cat and I was upside down
Think I got it now, think I got it now
I am flying, hope I never come back down

And in the morn', I heard the light
Filled with shadows of the night
Love said, "Mike, this time you're right"
Then of course disappeared into the white

Oh it always disappears into the white

Oh it always disappears into the white

Oh it always disappears into the white

Oh it always disappears into the white

So I lost my eye
To a sky of fire
To a sky of fire
I was hypnotized
I was hypnotized
By the morning light

By the morning light
By the morning light
By the morning light
By the morning light
By the morning light
By the morning light

MF Doom - Arrow Root

Instrumental off Special Herbs Volume 1

Good Morning - Radio Voice

She said it's tough but it's clear
To look at errors with fear
Who have walked in divine
You've been abused by the time

On air, she cries
She says, she'd like to thank her mother
Like to thank her mother
For her radio voice

Trying to hide
Doesn't like her school or her job
When she can't see the point
Says education is flawed
Well, we're just bodies in the ground

So she, she still wants to thank
She wants to thank her mother
She'd like to thank her mother
For her radio voice
Her radio voice

It keeps her outside
And lights the path on her home
Another caller on the phone
Baby, you're not so alone
Even still she says, she wants to thank her mother
For her radio voice

Loving - Nihilist Kite Flyer

Am I living my life as if I'm flying a kite
Without a string without any meaning
All through the day, all through the night
Asking myself when I just might
When I just might be found
When I just might see clearly
When I just might be found
With my feet above the ground

And though I've always wanted an answer
Now I know better

Or am I just blind?
By the need to be defined
Caught in between
Who I am and who I will be

And though I've always wanted an answer
Now I know better

Or am I just the one
drifting too close to the sun

Velvet Underground - I’m gonna walk right in

Instrumental track from White Light / White Heat sessions

Good Morning - You

Hey you,
You can't have to please everyone that pleases you
You don't have to put on a face and keep it all day too,
Oh, you.
But when you smile, well the legend lives on for a while.
Least it does in my eyes,
Oh, you.
Don't have to hide away on your own for one to approve.
And if you stay hiding baby, know I'll hide with you.
Oh, you.
When you act like a child, well the legend lives on for a while.
Least it does in my eyes,
eyes.
Hey you,
You're not the only one that needs something to do
Sometimes you have to see another point of view
Oh you,
And every time we get high, well the legend lives on for a while.
Least there's dust in my eyes,
eyes.

Cotton Jones - I am the changer

Everything has turned around
I was standing by the passing train
Might've coughed in the rain
Dropped a dollar down the gutter drain
Everything has turned around
Been waiting for a little change
And when finally it came
I just waited for another
Waited for another

You know I'm the changer
The rearranger
I'm always a stranger
And a liar, got a tongue on fire
I oughta cut it off
I oughta cut it off
And when I do, when I do I'm gonna let you know
Gonna gonna let you know

Cause everything has turned around
Now I'm sleeping in a garden bed
Tryin’ to clear my head
Sitting waitin' to be fed
'Cause everything has turned around
Two years above the budding grass
Let the hours pass
Always gonna catch the next one
Gonna catch the next one

You know I'm the waiter
The hesitator
I’ll get to it later
But I'm a liar, got a tongue on fire
I oughta cut it off
oughta cut it off, oughta cut it off
You know I'm the changer
The rearranger
I'm always a stranger
I'm always a stranger
I'm always a stranger
And the liar got a tongue on fire
I oughta cut it off
oughta cut it off
And when I do, when I do
I'm gonna let you know

Everything's gonna let you know
I'm a liar
Gonna cut it off
You know I'm a changer
The rearranger
I'm always a stranger
You know I'm a waiter
A hesitator
Gonna get to it later

Intermission

Sailing Stone - Saturday Night (dance the night away) (Peter Laughner Cover of a Sam Cooke inspired song)

Won’t you take her by the hand

Then you lead her on the floor

You know you wanna dance just a little bit more

Its Saturday night

Standing there well she looks so fine

Hey would you like to try

That’s all you’re gonna need just to get you high

On a Saturday night

See them girls dressed up so right

And the band they play so good

They shined up their Saturday shoes

Just so they could play for you

Oh to dance the night away

And the dawn might never come at all

One you take her by the hand

Two your gonna lead her on the floor

You know you wanna dance just a little bit more

On satuday night

The world outside is big and round

Hard to take when it’s tough and wild

But it’s alright when you’re Saturdays child

And its Saturday night

Oh to dance the night away

and the dawn might never come at all

Peter Laughner - Cinderella Backstreet

Oh I am a backstreet boy and anyone will tell you so
An eye on the moon if there were no tune
And for the kids with no place to go
Me and Scottie were talking that nervous way that we always did
That's when I realized I had something there to show him
And that I would have to keep it hid
I said I wanna walk on down in the ally
Down where the light shines so very dimly
I wanna shake hands with all the creatures that I meet
With miss Cinderella backstreet

Now I try to teach naivetй to kids brought up on tv
I tried hard to smile but I got hung up in style
Yeay it seems they saw right through me
You know, me and Ricky were talking
Between all the noise, the smoke and the jive
And I said play'em those blues
That you learned from the English dudes
Oh doesn’t really satisfy
I said I wanna walk on down in the ally
Down where the light shines so very dimly
Out where the ally cat walks on silent padded feet
With miss Cinderella backstreet

There was one down for the leather boys
And one for the never been kissed
Still another for all the ambulances
Yeah that we somehow seemed to miss
And one more just to dream on
And still another one for the show
Well Denise, she did my eyes and I felt just like a prize
Until the tears began to flow
And I had to go outside and take care of some business
With the gentleman from Morning Side Avenue
Who introduced me to his very best friend from Denver
He took me aside and advised me just what it was that I should do
And I said to him right now I wanna walk on down in the ally
Down where the light shines so very dimly
Out where the night is so complete
With miss Cinderella backstreet
I wanna walk down in the ally
Down where the light shines so very dimly
Out where the ally cat walks on siled padded feet
With miss Cinderella backstreet
With miss Cinderella backstreet
